About this Performance:
This lecture-demonstration Theremin concert introduces the 1919 Soviet music instrument invented by Russian electro-physicist Lev Termen. James will perform selections from Clara Rockmore’s tour repertoire by Josef Schillinger, George Gershwin and Serge Rachmaninoff among several other composers. In addition to the music, James covers Termen’s reported activities as a Soviet spy and his many years imprisoned in the Soviet Gulag leading him to invent the first electronic “bugs” that were secretly placed in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
As one reviewer wrote, “James has to be heard to be believed. His way with the instrument is virtually magical.”
Pictured to the right is Dennis James with the famous Theremin player Clara Rockmore. James was the final Theremin student of Rockmore, the singular historical virtuosa of the instrument active from the 1930’s to the 1950’s having become its leading touring concert performer. This photo was taken during one of his lesson visits to her New York City studio back in the late 1990’s.
This event is for ages 16 yrs and up, and beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for sale at the event. Doors will open at 6:15pm and the performance will begin at 7:00pm.
