Schools & Groups

SPARK’s Education Programs are fostering a new sense of science identity and support STEM learning through demonstrations and hands-on activities. Tours, workshops and outreach programs promote science literacy and the spirit of invention. All programs support state science standards. Opposites Attract Tour

Let us show your students the fun and fascinating effects of electricity, magnetism and sound. They begin their journey with a presentation of electrostatic generators, several small Tesla coils, and the Theremin. Then a guided tour in the museum shares the early inventions that led to our modern devices while also supporting the science and engineering practices expected of today’s student. Students also investigate electricity and magnetism through hands-on activities along with an opportunity to manipulate sound by playing the Theremin. (Groups can include a MegaZapper demonstration for an additional fee.)

  • Ages: grades 3-8
  • Cost: $7 grades 3-6; $9 grades 7-8
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Dates: Available September – May

Good Vibrations Tour

The science of sound is presented in this engaging tour developed for lower elementary students. An opening presentation introduces sound energy with fascinating demonstrations and brings everyone’s attention to how we make and hear sound. Students then visit the museum’s galleries where historic artifacts and modern equipment illustrate how sound energy effects their lives, from communications to entertainment. Children will see sound waves, listen to the first sound recordings, and manipulate pitch and volume to play music on the Theremin. Additional hands-on activities in the Learning Center will help children further explore the physical nature of sound energy.

  • Ages: pre K – grade 3
  • Cost: $7/per student
  • Duration: 60-90 minutes (dependent on age & student count)
  • Dates: Available September – May

Full STEAM Ahead Field Trip

Support the science and engineering practice of developing models with our Full STEAM Ahead Field Trip. This program starts with an electrifying presentation using several small Tesla Coils. With this excitement fresh in students’ minds, we’ll turn our attention to drawing a Tesla Coil focusing on visual observation, shape, line, scale and perspective. The program also includes a guided tour of the galleries allowing students to explore electricity, magnetism and sound, and see first-hand the fascinating inventions that are the forerunners of our modern devices. (Groups can include a MegaZapper demonstration for an additional fee.)

  • Ages: Grades 4-8
  • Cost: $9 grades 4-6; $11 grades 7-8
  • Duration: 1.5-2 hours depending on group size
  • Dates: Available September – May

Gallery Tour

From kindergarteners to serious physics students and senior citizens, these tours have amazed and inspired the minds of the lucky visitor who participates. Docents focus the tours on specified artifacts or collections which may include Ben Franklin, the Static Lab, Edison Cylinders, Theremin, motors, batteries, or any number of other exhibits, and we demonstrate our smaller Tesla Coils with much excitement and appreciation. (Groups can include a MegaZapper demonstration for an additional fee.)

  • Ages: Kindergarten – Senior Citizens
  • Cost: $7 K-5 / $9 grades 6-12 and adults
  • Duration: 1-2 hours (age appropriate)
